New Calgary Hotel: The Westley

With a mix of old styles and new, this charming boutique hotel takes on shades of its former office-building persona.

  The Westley
Chic simplicity defines rooms in six categories at The Westley, ranging from cozy and compact to a one-bedroom suite.

Overview: The Hilton Tapestry Collection hotel expansion continues in Canada, this time with the recent opening of the 104-room, pet-friendly Westley Hotel in downtown Calgary, at 630 4 Avenue SW. Expect custom art by local artists and facilities that include two meeting spaces and a sunlit fitness centre.

Crowd: This will draw a mixed bag of business and recreational visitors, very likely skewing younger, thanks to a distinctly 1970s vibe, its interior design playing on the building’s heritage, replete with velvet, brass and fringe in a modern-meets-vintage sort of way.

Agenda: The Westley is within walking distance of Prince’s Island Park and the 1,000-kilometre network of paths following the Bow River. The Core Shopping Centre and the Stephen Avenue dining district are just a few blocks south.

Essential: Calgary restaurateur Cody Willis, of Thank You Hospitality, has launched Fonda Fora on the main floor, bringing the company’s hallmark Mexican style to the party. Headed by chef Rafael Castillo, who was raised in the Yucatan Peninsula, the kitchen is also the nerve centre for in-room dining.

Timing: Up and running!
